The people behind the controller.

A father and his son — one who built the charity, one who lived the reason for it.

Jim Carol with the GameChanger team

Jim Carol

Jim founded GameChanger in 2007 after his son Taylor's cancer diagnosis, when he saw firsthand that games and play were a lifeline through long hospital stays. He set out to bring that same lifeline to every kid in a hospital bed — building, with a community of volunteers, the world's only networked Xbox hospital system. He still leads the organization today.

Taylor Carol

Taylor is a childhood-cancer survivor who came through five years of treatment with a controller in his hand — the lived experience at the heart of GameChanger's mission. Today he helps lead the charity, carrying its work to families, hospitals, and the gaming industry. "The cure had a controller."

Stats you can cite, with their sources.

Play isn't a nice extra — it's clinically supported. Here is the evidence base behind the claim, sourced.

  • Distraction — including games and play — is the best-supported way to ease the pain and distress of children's needle procedures. Birnie et al., Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (2018) — 59 trials, 5,550 children.
  • Game-based and virtual-reality distraction produces large reductions in children's pain and anxiety during medical procedures. Eijlers et al., Anesthesia & Analgesia (2019).
  • Play is essential to healthy child development — pediatricians are urged to "prescribe" it. American Academy of Pediatrics, Pediatrics (2018).
  • There are roughly 3.5 billion gamers worldwide — a community GameChanger mobilizes for kids in hospitals. Industry estimate, ~3.5 billion gamers globally.
  • GameChanger operates the world's only networked Xbox hospital system, serving over 350 kids a day at one partner site alone. Katy Welkie, CEO, Primary Children's Hospital: "…the world's most advanced safe gaming network in any hospital — serving over 350 kids a day."
